For toptier farmers the top 5 goes: Archmage Nechronomancer Legion Revenant Shaman (with elysium) Archfiend. Shaman can reach really high dps but only really with Elysium and against high hp targets. Archmage is by far the best farmer for pretty much every category.

All of them can be attained in due time through just earning them. I'd say joining the Legion is a better use-- and if you pre-farm the stuff to finish the Legion quests (namely the Battle Trophies) you can complete them fast enough to sell the armor back and get 1080 back, spending just 120 to join.
